The Coral Sea is protected as the Coral Sea Marine Park. Its management plan and protection measures came into effect on 1 July 2018, after no-take zones were reduced in area by approximately 53% compared to the original proposed zoning. Diving is best from June to September. Grey reef sharks, silvertip sharks and turtles are resident, while great white sharks are occasionally seen and humpback whales and whale sharks are seasonal visitors.
