Scapa Flow holds the largest concentration of warship wrecks and other wartime artefacts in the UK, centred on the scuttled German High Seas Fleet. It is a Historic Marine Protected Area, and the wrecks of 3 battleships of the German High Seas Fleet are a scheduled monument. It is a criminal offence to remove, alter or disturb any of the named sites, and divers must first obtain a permit from the Island Harbour Authorities. Divers are permitted to enter the wrecks but not to retrieve artefacts located within 100 metres of any wreck. Corals and fans are resident, and grey seals and moray eels are occasionally seen.
